A checkout is how you finish a leg of 501 or 301: the darts that take your score to exactly zero, with the last one a double or the bullseye. This chart lists a recommended route for every score from 170 down to 2. Use the calculator for single-out games, or to find a finish when you only have one or two darts left.
Checkout chart: 170 to 2
T = treble, D = double, Bull = bullseye (50). The finishing double is highlighted.

Bogey numbers
Seven scores of 170 or less can't be checked out with three darts: 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159. If you're on one of them, use the visit to leave a finish instead, ideally a two-dart one or a favourite double.
Choosing your doubles
Double 16 (32) is a favourite because it keeps splitting into doubles: a single 16 leaves 16 (D8), then 8 (D4), then 4 (D2). Double 20 (40, "tops") is the most common finish on TV, and double 18, double 10 and double 8 are popular too. When you set up a finish, aim to leave one of these.
One-, two- and three-dart finishes
Every even number up to 40 is a one-dart finish on its double, and 50 is a one-dart finish on the bull. Anything from 41 to 110 can be finished with two darts (110 is treble 20 and the bull) except 109, 108, 106, 105, 103, 102 and 99, which need three. From 111 to 170 you always need three darts.
Practise your finishing
Knowing the routes is half of it; hitting them is the other half. Start a game of 501 and DartNow shows the checkout after every dart, or pick a starting score of 101 for a quick finishing drill. Playing without doubles? Set the calculator to single out, or turn double out off in the game settings.
Frequently asked questions
What is the highest checkout in darts?
170: treble 20, treble 20, bullseye. It's the highest score you can finish with three darts and is known as the big fish.
What are bogey numbers in darts?
Scores of 170 or less that can't be finished with three darts: 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159. On one of those, use the visit to leave yourself a finish instead.
What is the best double to leave?
Double 16 (32) is the classic choice because a single 16 leaves 16, then 8, then 4, all still doubles. Double 20 (40) is the most common finish, and double 18, double 10 and double 8 are popular too.
Can you check out on the bull?
Yes. The bullseye counts as a double (double 25), so 50 is a one-dart finish and the bull ends checkouts like 170 and 110.
